History of RWTÜV
RWTÜV was originally a German technical inspection organisation (a so-called TÜV) with certain official functions. The merger of several steam boiler inspection organisations lead to the formation of Technischer Überwachungsverein Essen e.V. in 1939 (Essen Technical Inspection Organisation with the status of a "registered association"). The name was changed in 1969 to Rheinisch Westfälischer Technischer Überwachungsverein e.V. The members of RWTÜV e.V. are industrial and commercial companies in the region. The organisation grew in importance and was entrusted by the North Rhine Westphalian state government with a steadily increasing variety of technical inspections. The overall objective was "to protect people, the environment and property from the adverse effects of technical installations".
In 1993 RWTÜV e.V. transferred all its business operations to a public limited company - RWTÜV GmbH. Under the management of RWTÜV AG the group successfully diversified into consultancy companies and service providers outside traditional technical inspection activities, focusing an forward-looking technologies such as IT and telecommunications. Nowadays RWTÜV e.V. concentrates on asset management and on the monitoring of the operational business by RWTÜV GmbH.
RWTÜV GmbH leads as a financial and management holding the consultancy and service operations which are not related to technical inspection activities. With its workforce of approx. 1.200 and a turnover of about € 140 million.
Having steadily developed both nationally and internationally, the traditional TÜV-activities were merged in 2004 with those of the technical inspection organisations TÜV NORD e.V., Hamburg, and TÜV Hannover/Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. into TÜV NORD AG. This group now has a workforce of around 9.200 and a turnover of approx. € 950 million (2010). It is one of the large testing and inspection companies in the world. RWTÜV GmbH is one of its three shareholders with a 36.1% holding.
