DÜV makes the spark glow

In April 1872, the "Dampfkesselüberwachungsverein in den Industriebezirken Lenne, Sieg und Dill e.V." commenced its activities as a steam boiler inspection association. It was renamed "DÜV zu Siegen e.V." in 1899. The foundation stone was laid for 150 years in the service of safety, value awareness and research!

At the end of the 18th century, the industrial revolution swiftly gained speed after James Watt developed the first low-pressure steam engine in England. The “age of the machine” took the European continent by storm. But the new invention was both a blessing and a curse. It enabled hitherto unimaginable productivity increases and revolutionised transport.

Yet there were some unpleasant side-effects: soot and pollution from the burning coal, as well as fires and injuries. The biggest hazard, however, was an exploding boiler – whether due to overheating or poor design and construction. Not only were buildings and machinery destroyed, but people also lost their lives. A very liberal German state at the time saw itself as responsible in principle for protecting people from danger, but not in a position to monitor or control this new technology.

Some initiative was called for. Operators who wanted to protect workers, safeguard capital and maintain the public reputation of the new technology had to take action themselves! Not least also to protect their interests from heavy-handed state intervention and regulation. The spark behind the idea of an operators’ association to inspect steam boilers again came from Great Britain, and quickly spread to Germany.

People, material assets and the environment should be protected from adverse effects of technical devices and equipment; experience in operation and application should be collected AND disseminated; and boiler operators and engineers should be properly trained.
