A step ahead: collect data, analyse data, secure data

Way back in 1987, RWTÜV presented data processing services at the Systems computer exhibition in Munich. Just a few years later, in 1991, an information security department was established specifically to offer testing in this product segment. This forward-looking move was rewarded when an agreement was signed with the TeleSec department of the then Deutsche Post Telekom, to conduct research on digital signatures. A burgeoning team of product development consultants generated growth in sales and reputation, leading to a contract with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Expertise in software quality assurance, smart cards and readers grew as a result. RWTÜV-approved smart cards for secure voice encryption for phone calls, security chip cards for Siemens-Nixdorf developed in cooperation with RWTÜV experts, and an electronic health insurance card launched in 1994 with the aid of RWTÜV expertise brought further growth. The information security department developed into TÜVit GmbH, which quickly became the market leader and entered into international partnerships.

Technologies relating to digital signature systems and network security proved to be key revenue drivers. Stricter requirements for testing, certification and validations in digital signature systems favoured the formation of a separate company for information security. This is how secunet GmbH came into being in December 1996. Consulting and solution development – for example for a Deutsche Telekom “TrustCenter” – could now be taken on by this company, while the prescribed testing continued to be carried out by TÜViT. It had a specially established certification and validation centre that was recognised by Deutsche Post and Deutsche Telekom. Today, TÜViT belongs to the TÜV NORD Group, in which RWTÜV holds a 36.1% stake. It offers services such as hardware and software evaluations, cyber security audits, infrastructures for data centres, information security management, consulting on data privacy, eID, trust services and public key infrastructure (PKI), IT project management and quality assurance, alarm receiving centre certification and much more. secunet was acquired by the Munich-based technology group Giesecke+Devrient in 2003.
